A month after the tragic collapse of a shelter at the Novi Sad railway station, which claimed the lives of 15 people and left two others hospitalised, citizens gathered to commemorate the victims through a peaceful protest. The march began at the railway station and concluded at Freedom Square, with participants stopping 15 times along the route to observe a minute of silence for each life lost.
The protest began at precisely 11:52 am at the railway station, with attendees calling for the release of all confidential documents related to the incident and demanding the resignation of Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric and Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic. Demonstrators carried the message, „We are all under the shelter,“ as they walked towards the City Hall.
Earlier in the day, protest organisers noted the deployment of Gendarmerie forces at City Hall but emphasised their commitment to a peaceful demonstration. „City Hall is not our focus today,“ they stated.
The procession passed quietly by the offices of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), where several dozen SNS members had gathered. Upon reaching Freedom Square, protesters and activists engaged in symbolic acts, painting „bloody hands“ with red paint and leaving messages directed at authorities, urging accountability for the shelter collapse.
Organisers announced a follow-up gathering on Monday to support students and teachers from Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj Gymnasium. The school community had recently come under attack by pro-government tabloids after honouring the victims of the shelter collapse.
