Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said the second semester in primary and secondary schools will begin on January 20, and that the deadline for assigning the final grades for the first semester, which ended early under a Government decision, has been extended until January 24 or 25.

“My message regarding the education sector: The second semester starts on January 20, period!,” Vucevic told reporters during a hospital visit in Vranje.

“We have extended the deadline for finalizing grades until January 24 or 25. Teachers can assign final grades, there will be no insistence on completing that by January 20, that’s part of the agreement. They have enough time to assign the grades for the first semester,” Blic quoted him as saying.

Commenting on the announced strikes in some schools, Vucevic said that those who break the law and do not have the support or protection of the unions will face consequences.

“It’s very simple, these are state schools,” the prime minister said, adding that his message to students and parents, to prevent confusion from media pressure and misinformation, is: “Schools are starting across Serbia on January 20.”

Regarding negotiations with major education workers’ unions, Vucevic noted that an agreement has been reached on key salary increase demands.
