A police patrol escorting a group of student marchers interrupted the 16 Minutes of Silence tribute under orders from their station chief on Friday.
The group of young people are marching from the village of Baras in Vojvodina to Belgrade as part of efforts to “wake up” the country. The silent tribute was extended to 16 on Friday because on of the people injured in the collapse of a concrete awning at Novi Sad Railway Station on November 1 died at the Military Medical Hospital in Belgrade.
‘We stopped for the 16 Minutes of Silence and at about the 10th minute the police chief called the patrol escorting us and ordered them to move us off the road because international highways can’t be blocked,” an Instagram post said.
It added that the patrol officers told them they would not be escorting them down the road and would take down their names because they blocked the highway. The post added that the drivers who were stopped got out of their cars and stood in silence for the tribute.
