The head of Belgrade University has been summoned to the police for questioning, the FoNet news agency reported on Thursday.

FoNet sources said that the police want to question Rector Vladan Djokic on Friday (Good Friday for the Serbian Orthodox Church) as part of an investigation into possible charges of abuse of official position. The summons comes after Djokic openly sided with the students who have been protesting for months. State officials have called for his arrest and alleged that he was criminally accountable.

Earlier, President Aleksandar Vucic threatened to cut off the financing of state universities, including Belgrade University, and redirect the money to private universities which are alleged to be owned or controlled by people close to the regime. “That will destroy the monopoly of the state universities and they won’t be able to blackmail anyone any more. They will have to fight on the market and our children will be able to study,” he said.

The Academic Solidarity and Engagement Network (MASA) called the academic community to gather in front of the Criminal Police Department in New Belgrade on Friday morning in a show of solidarity with Djokic.

The Students in Blockade condemned the pressure on Belgrade University Rector Djokic who they said was with the students from the start.
