A poll showed that young Serbians do not know enough about the 1990s but that they view that period in a negative light.
The Perceptions of the 1990s Among Young People in Serbia showed that mention of those years brings up associations with wars, conflicts, economic crisis, crime and overall social degeneration, the Grad Culutre Center said. It was conducted by the Museum of the 1990s and the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory among young people aged 18 to 30.
The people polled said that they don’t have enough information about the 1990s and that the reasons for the wars are unclear. They said they learned about the period from parents and older generations and not enough in school. They know about opposed versions of history and said that Slobodan Milosevic is the face of the 1990s with some saying they know about the Otpor movement and protests that toppled the Milosevic regime.
The poll also showed that the 1990s are not just history to the young people in Serbia but that they see the present as a continuation of that period with consequences still being felt primarily in terms of tension in the region.
