Four municipalities in the north of Kosovo (Leposavic, Zubin Potok, Zvecan and Severna Mitrovica) are holding extraordinary local elections on Sunday.

All polling stations were opened at 7:00 on Sunday morning. Voting will take place at 19 polling stations, including five schools in villages and settlements in the north of Kosovo where the Albanian population is the majority, while in areas with a majority Serbian population, voting will be organized in containers placed next to the main roads in the north of Kosovo.

A few days before the election, members of the Kosovo Police were deployed next to the containers and are on duty around those polling stations day and night. The policemen are mainly from other parts of Kosovo, of Albanian nationality, because the Serb policemen in the north of Kosovo left their service on November 5, when Serbs left all Kosovo institutions. The turnout until 11 am was very low, in Leposavic and Zvecan below 0.5 percent, in Zubin Potok and Severna Mitrovica around one percent.

According to Central election commission data, there are 45,095 eligible voters in the elections for mayors of municipalities in the north of Kosovo, and 20,314 for councilors in the municipalities of Leposavic and Zvecan.

The elections will be closely monitored by 357 observers, including representatives of 31 organizations, who will also monitor the procedures after the closing of the polling stations. Accredited observers represent political subjects, media, non-governmental organizations and foreign missions in Kosovo.
