Serbian Justice Minister Maja Popovic told UN war crimes prosecutor Serge Brammertz that justice is crucial to building trust in the Western Balkans.

Popovic told the Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals that punishing war crimes and achieving justice is needed to normalize relations in the region.

She added that Serbia’s judiciary has completed a number of court proceedings providing “the best proof that the Republic of Serbia is conducting a responsible policy which is the condition for stability in this part of Europe”.

A press release said that they stressed the importance of advancing regional cooperation on missing persons and the need for an equal approach to processing the people responsible.

It said that they discussed cooperation between Belgrade and the Mechanism, processing war crimes and regional judiciary cooperation on those cases.
