Power outage stretches past 30 hours in Jadar Valley villages
Several villages in the vicinity of the Serbian city of Loznica have been experiencing prolonged power outages, with some areas also facing water shortages, the We Won't Give Up Jadar association said.
Activist Nebojsa Petrovic said the blackout began at different times across the affected area, with some villages losing power as early as 4 pm Monday, while the village of Nedeljice went dark around 7 pm.
He explained that the situation is particularly severe in villages that depend on electric water pumps located above their reservoirs. “Without electricity, these pumps don’t work, leaving residents without both power and water for over 30 hours in some locations,” said Petrovic.
He explained that they do not officially know the cause of the outages, as they haven’t been able to get any answers from the authorities.
Villages closer to Loznica, such as Jadranska Lesnica, Donji Dobric, Trsic, and Vocnjak, maintain their power supply, while villages within the Jadar Valley - an area designated for future mining operations - remain without electricity, said Petrovic.
The affected region coincides with the location where the company Rio Tinto plans to develop a lithium mine.
