A protest of preschool workers was held today in Belgrade, organized by the community of preschool employees known as “Preschool Circle.” At Republic Square, the so-called “Preschool Edict” was adopted, and preschool institution employees along with parents of preschoolers then marched to the Ministry of Education, where they read out their demands.

Maja Crnogorac Djuric from the Zemun Preschool Institution told N1 that the “Preschool Edict” obliges them to act in accordance with the values expressed within it.

She reminded that preschool employees are only now organizing because they had previously been hindered by a “peculiar web of legal circumstances,” meaning that educators do not have the legal right to strike in the full sense and cannot simply shut down kindergartens when dissatisfied.

The announcement for the first protest gathering stated that the goal is to articulate the stance of preschool employees toward societal changes initiated by students and to unite the broader community around issues important to the preschool education sector — and thus to society as a whole.
