Prosecutors in Belgrade freed a close friend of the Serbian President of charges of driving while intoxicated and inflicting harm on other drivers.
The First Basic Prosecution said in a statement that Nikola Petrovic was found to have less than the allowed level of alcohol in his blood and was not have found to have been driving under the influence of drugs even though cocaine was found in his urine. He was charged with causing a traffic accident while driving intoxicated and inflicting injuries on two women in another car.
The statement added that doctors did not find that the two women in the car that Petrovic drove into sustained any serious injuries and that the damage to their vehicle was not in excess of 200,000 Dinars (1 Euro – 117 Dinars) which means that Petrovic can’t face criminal charges only traffic law violations.
The prosecution said misdemeanor proceedings have been initiated.
The police filed criminal charges against Petrovic following the accident in Belgrade.
The case came to public attention thanks to whistleblower police Major Katarina Petrovic who was charged with revealing details of the case which the police was alleged to have been hiding. The Major was freed of charges following protests of support.
