Vucic visits Novi Sad for only second time since fatal railway station canopy collapse

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic visited Novi Sad on Sunday to attend a regional heritage fair, marking only his second visit to the city since a railway station canopy collapsed in November 2024, killing 16 people and triggering widespread anti-government protests.

Vucic’s visit was brief. He attended the event and stopped at a fast-food restaurant near the exhibition complex. Pro-government media reported that the president “walked through” the city alongside Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader and former Prime Minister Milos Vucevic.
After the fair, Vucic made an unannounced visit to Petrovaradin, a neighborhood across the Danube River, later sharing photos from a restaurant at the Petrovaradin Fortress on social media. He was accompanied by senior SNS officials, including Novi Sad Mayor Zarko Micin and Vojvodina government head Maja Gojkovic.
Public perception that Vucic has avoided Novi Sad has persisted since the November 1 disaster, which occurred at a recently renovated railway station. Student-led protests have blamed corruption for the collapse, and three legal proceedings are ongoing, including cases against two former government ministers.
Vucic has not visited the site of the collapse or publicly paid tribute to the victims. He has previously announced plans to hold a major party rally in Novi Sad, but the event has not taken place.
