The Serbian Press Council called the Ministry of Information to sanction the media outlets that violated ethical standards in reporting on missing 2-year-old girl Danka Ilic.

The Press Council said the Ministry should react immediately and sanction the media who broke the law with their “scandalous, sensationalist, upsetting and shameful reporting” and called them to show compassion for the family.

Two men were arrested and confessed to hitting little Danka Ilic with their car and then leaving the body at a garbage dump.

The Friends of Children of Serbia also called the Ministry of Information to sanction the media whose reporting on Danka Ilic was “completely de-humanized”. “The media have to be guided by and not jeopardize the public interest,” it said.

The Press Council said that some media outlets reported details of the crime in violation of all ethical standards and basic decency and humanity.
