Economy Minister Artane Rizvanolli said on Wednesday that the Kosovo authorities are looking into ways to start collecting power bill payments in northern municipalities.

She said that failure to pay for electricity can no longer be tolerated. According to the Kosovo authorities, households and companies in the majority-Serb municipalities in the north have not been paying their power bills for some 20 years. Under an energy agreement reached in 2013 by Belgrade and Pristina, the Elektrosever company was to have been in charge of billing and collections but the company was never formed.

The minister warned that Kosovo will have to import power over the winter, adding that it is now using reserves stored in neighboring Albania. “We are entering a stage when we have to save energy because that will lower imports and expenses,” she said. Rizvanolli said that the Kosovo police did a good job in curbing cryptocurrency mining in the north.
