When citizens have low salaries, it is difficult for them to focus on issues such as ecology and politics as they are “scared,” Professor of the Faculty of Economics, Danica Popovic, told N1, adding that in order to raise those salaries, productivity must be increased in the country.
Popovic argued that new, “highly productive” companies must be started in Serbia, adding that many EU countries, including Slovakia and Ireland, have raised the standard of their citizens this way.
„None of us wants a future in which one company will make money, in which (Aleksandar) Vucic will stay in power, one party will rule and keep telling us that GDP has grown by five percent. We don’t care about that,” she said.
“We want new jobs, for the country to open up for those foreigners who are interested in coming, such as software developers, some advanced technologies to come, and for them to bring some polluters,” she said, referring to the mass protest that took place in Belgrade on Saturday.
Members of more than 30 environmental organizations, as well as numerous others, including public figures, protested to express their dissatisfaction with what they say is the government’s failure to respond to pollution caused by private companies in the country.
Popovic said that the citizens of Serbia are scared, as they earn „terribly little“ and a very small number of people receive the average salary.
“People get 20 or 30 thousand dinars (about € 170 – € 250) each. In those conditions, you no longer think about big things,” she said, arguing that this is why citizens need activism and someone reminding them of larger issues.
