"In these conditions, with decades of low birth rates that have been declining continuously, as well as with the increased mortality rates that reached very high numbers during the pandemic and significant emigration, there is no room for optimism," Santic told Nova.

She said that an increase in the number of inhabitants was recorded only in the Belgrade region thanks to immigration.

She noted that the entire Balkan region is in a similar situation.

The census will be conducted in Serbia in October and the results should be available as of April 2023.
