Ivanka Popovic, former Belgrade University dean and one of the founders of the ProGlas initiative, said Monday that the current student movement in Serbia will enter the country's history books as a significant social and political event.
In an interview with the daily Nova, Popovic expressed her belief that the academic community understands the importance of showing solidarity with the protesting students. She emphasized that professors’ place is alongside the demonstrating youth.
“It is our duty to support them in leading and at one point bringing to a close the blockades in a way that will demonstrate that humanity and justice have not completely vanished from this country. The professors who don't understand this are not worthy of their titles,” Popovic said.
The academic described attempts to discredit the protesting university students as “pathetic,” noting they have achieved the opposite effect. “The public reacted with outrage to the obvious use of security services in harassing the students and their families,” she said.
Addressing the work of ProGlas, Popovic revealed that the initiative has proposed 18 initial measures aimed at fundamentally transforming Serbian society and addressing the consequences of years of abuse and misuse of the state and its resources.
