A senior prosecutor was promoted after taking part in the arrest and processing of people taking part in the protests at Belgrade City Hall, the Nova daily newspaper said on Wednesday.

Prosecutor Mirjana Jovanovic of the Higher Public Prosecution (VJT) in Belgrade has been given a higher position in the Organized Crime Prosecution, the daily said, adding that she is a close associate of Belgrade chief Prosecutor Nenad Stefanovic who is alleged to have close ties to the Serbian authorities.

Jovanovic was transferred to the Organized Crime Prosecution just a day after she interrogated 38 people beaten and arrested by the police in front of City Hall on Sunday, December 24.

An unnamed VJT source said that the powers that be obviously appreciate the act that she processed the young protesters who are being charged with attempting to disrupt constitutional order by force.

Nova daily said Jovanovic will get a 100 percent pay rise bringing her monthly income to 400,000 Dinars (1 Euro – 117 Dinars).

The Organized Crime Prosecution told N1 on Wednesday that the decision on prosecutor Mirjana Jovanovic’s transfer was passed before the protests, on December 8, 2023, stating that she is to be transferred to the Organized Crime Prosecution on January 1, 2024, for a three-year term in office.
