Prosecutors follow up on Vucic accusations against student protest organizers

Prosecutors in Belgrade are following up on accusations by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic that the student organizers of a mass protest in March 2025 fabricated claims of the use of a sonic weapon against the crowd.
The Belgrade Higher Public Prosecution (VJT) ordered the Police Anti-Terrorist Service to collect information about a meeting of students from multiple Belgrade University students who allegedly drew up plans to simulate the use of a sonic weapon at the mass protest on March 15, 2025 in central Belgrade.
Vucic said on April 16, 2025 that the claims of a sonic weapon being used against protesters was “a pre-organized, intentional attack on the state to provoke absolute instability and the violent overthrow of constitutional order”. The Serbian authorities called in the FBI and Russian FSB to investigate. The FSB released its report saying the LRAD sonic devices the Serbian police has in its arsenal were not used. International organizations reviewed evidence and confirmed the use of a sonic device during the protest.
The VJT also ordered interviews with everyone who made public claims of the use of a sonic weapon against protesters to ascertain how they got that information.
The VJT said that investigators looking into the death of a female student at the Belgrade University School of Philosophy earlier this year found information about other alleged criminal acts. The investigators seized documents related to student meetings including a meeting by the Umbrella Working Group for Security (KRBG) organized by the informal group Students in Blockade on January 22, 2025. The statement alleged that the meeting discussed a “sound cannon” which would bring “a fat response from Brussels” and that people in China get out of the way when they see a sonic weapon. “Meeting participants and unidentified persons are suspected of undertaking actions to realize the simulation of a sound cannon by state bodies at the protest planned for March 15, 2025 in Belgrade in order to accuse them of using a sound cannon to create panic and fear among the citizens and cause unrest which would lead to the violent change of constitutional order and endanger the security of the state,” the statement said.
“The police have been instructed to identify the persons who took part in the KRGB meeting on January 22, 2025 and interview them about the discussion and adopted proposal in terms of the police having a sound cannon, that it is a serious weapon and that in China people get out of the way when they see a sound cannon and to explain the claim why the sound cannon would get a fat response from Brussels as well as all other relevant circumstances that were the subject of that meeting,” the statement said.
The VJT also ordered interviews with everyone who made public claims about the use of the sonic weapon at the protest and an investigation into who organized the medical examinations of protesters who suffered injuries from the sonic weapon.
The crowd at the protest parted in panic at one point with videos confirming that whatever they were running from came down the main street they were in.
