The Freedom for All protest was organized by a civic initiative whose leader Misa Baculov, a councilor in Novi Sad City Assembly, is in jail for causing a public health hazard. Baculov drove a tractor with a tanker up to Novi Sad City Hall and poured its contents onto the sidewalk in front of the building during a protest over the deaths of 14 people in the collapse of a roof at Novi Sad Railway Station. Initially, the liquid was reported to be feces-contaminated but Baculov said later that it was water from the public water supply system in the city of Zrenjanin which has not had safe drinking water for years.
Most of the small crowd wore T-shirts with the words Freedom for Misa and Freedom for All on them.
Baculov’s wife Katarina, also a councilor in Novi Sad City Assembly, told reporters that there are no legal grounds to keep her husband in jail. “Misa told me that we should not give up,” she said. Baculov was arrested during the protest, released on house arrest and later ordered held for 30 days along with several others after prosecutors appealed the court ruling to release them.
The crowd demanded the release of everyone arrested during the protest.
