The protesters will present the following demands:
1. The resignation of Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric
2. Full disclosure of all confidential contracts concerning the Novi Sad railway station reconstruction
3. Immediate arrest of those responsible for the deaths of 14 people, and the release of all wrongfully detained individuals
4. Emergency audit of all infrastructure projects initiated or completed in the past decade
Fourteen people were killed and another three severely injured when a concrete canopy collapsed on November 1 at the recently renovated train station in the northern city of Novi Sad.
Following the tragedy, a peaceful protest was organized in the city, which eventually turned into chaos in the city center. Groups of masked young men vandalized the offices of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) that had previously been splattered with red paint by protesters.
The City Hall was also vandalized, doors and windows were shattered, and the building was targeted with flares. The hooligans also damaged a nearby construction site.
“This is clearly staged. This is not a genuine protest. This is (Serbian President Aleksandar) Vucic and his planted agents. They're not one of us,” a Novi Sad resident told N1.
“It’s obvious. Vucic paid them to cause destruction in the city, this wasn’t done by frustrated citizens. These were hired vandals who are not being arrested because they are working for him,” another local resident said.
The attacks on City Hall continued unchecked for nearly three hours.
