Citizens gathered on Friday morning outside the Bogatic municipal council building to show support for councilors from the ruling coalition, and help them to “vote their conscience” at the Friday session, as it was revealed in informal conversations that these councilors are against lithium mining but are facing significant pressure to vote otherwise.
The ruling coalition comprises the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), and Serbian Radical Party (SRS).
Lithium mining is listed as items 13 and 14 on the agenda of the Friday local council meeting.
Dejan Milosavljevic from the civic group “Victory for Macva” (Bogatic is a town and municipality located in the Macva District of western Serbia) said he called for this show of public support because he knows these people are under great pressure.
“These councilors are against the mine, but they are not free to think for themselves, they have been under immense pressure over the past week – from Belgrade, from the municipal leadership. We learned about all these pressures in our off-the-record conversations. We have gathered these people to give them support, to encourage them to vote according to their conscience and the way they think they should,” Milosavljevic told N1.
A protest is also scheduled, for 6pm Friday, outside the Sabac city administration building.
