Teachers at a Belgrade high school whose students have joined the university student protests have been denied their salaries for February.

A teacher at the 5th Grammar School in central Belgrade told N1 that the teaching staff did not get the first half of their February salaries. Rastko Jevtovic said that the teachers stood with the students in the demand to remove acting headmistress Danka Nesovic and replace her with one of the school’s teachers.

Education Minister Slavica Djukic Dejanovic said that the salaries of teachers who did not hold classes were cut in line with the law.

“We feel humiliated, offended and the law was broken but that does not affect the decision by the majority of the staff to take part in the 24-hour blockade which we took in shifts to protect the school and students,” he said, adding that it’s illegal to take away protesting teachers’ salaries.

The 5th Grammar School was among the first to side with protesting university students.
