Protests, blockades continue across Serbia, major rally outside Belgrade Law School

On Thursday, protests and city blockades swept across Serbia for another day. Belgrade, Novi Sad, Uzice, Subotica, Nis, Zajecar, Gornji Milanovac, Kraljevo and Cacak were among the towns where citizens took to the streets, shutting down roads, intersections, and bridges.

In the Serbian capital blockades were organized at multiple locations.
A large crowd gathered outside the University of Belgrade Law School to protest an incident from Wednesday evening, when, according to student protesters, riot police attempted to force their way into the building and detained around 30 students.
Speaking to the crowd outside the Law School, Viktor Gostiljac, former president of the Serbian Bar Association, vowed that lawyers would stand in front of students and citizens if police intervened again.
“We will provide legal assistance to citizens. We will listen to what students have to say, and we ask you to listen to us. We know what needs to be done,” Gostiljac said.
Outside the Law School, students signed powers of attorney with lawyers offering free legal aid.
University of Belgrade Rector Vladan Dokic also addressed the gathered crowd.
“Last night, students here received heavy blows from public order forces. These blows struck not only the students but also their friends, fellow students, parents, and us, their professors. The attacks targeted the university and the academic community—right here at the doorstep of the Law School,” Djokic said.
He condemned the actions, saying, “This is not just an assault on university autonomy but an attack on the lives of those who were here. We demand that public authorities refrain from brutal attacks on students and citizens. Order and peace aren’t restored with batons; trust in institutions must be earned.”
In Belgrade, trolleybus and tram services were suspended Thursday evening, while bus services continued with restrictions, delays, and disruptions, Ivan Bankovic, head of the Belgrade City Public Transport Company (GSP) union Centar told FoNet.
In Novi Sad, protesters blocked two bridges over the Danube and several intersections.
Radivoje Jovovic, a member of the Vojvodina assembly and university professor, was arrested in the city during a blockade. N1 has learned that he was detained for disturbing public order. Jovovic said he was simply standing at an intersection near a police station.
Social media footage showed the Belgrade-Bar railway line being blocked in Uzice.
