Protests on World Autism Awareness Day
Parents of autistic children gathered in Belgrade, Nis, Kragujevac and Novi Sad for a protest on World Autism Awareness Day.
Dozens of parents gathered in front of the Serbian government headquarters, reading out demands which they said would make the lives of both parents and autistic children easier. The crowd then marched to the central Republic Square.
The protests were staged to draw attention to a lack of systemic support. Serbia does not have a national registry of people with autism as the basic requirement to develop a strategy for solutions to problems. The parents want a law on caregiver parents and personal companions for children with autism.
