A police officer, who Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Internal Affairs Minister Ivica Dacic claimed was injured by students, has confirmed that his injuries were actually inflicted by his colleagues, Radar reported.

On Monday evening, Gendarmerie trooper Lazar Bacic, who was wearing plain clothes, sustained an eye injury outside the Serbian state TV (RTS) building in central Belgrade where students were staging a protest after one of the public broadcaster’s journalists referred to them as a mob during an interview with President Vucic earlier in the evening.

Radar published a transcript of Bacic’s phone conversation with a former police colleague and fellow townsman from Loznica, Slobodan Pajic. In this conversation, Bacic confirmed that his injuries were caused by members of his own unit.

Video footage circulating on social media shows Bacic being struck in the face with an official baton by one of his subordinates from the Belgrade Gendarmerie unit.

President Aleksandar Vucic blamed the students participating in the protest for Bacic’s injury, but the videos clearly tell a different story.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Internal Affairs forwarded a statement to the media that it claims is from Gendarmerie trooper Lazar Bacic, in which he says that “only a thorough investigation will lead to the establishment of the exact facts.”

Bacic said that his phone conversation was misused, that his words had been taken out of context, and expressed gratitude to “everyone who has shown concern for his health, especially the president of the Republic, ministers, his superiors, and doctors.”
