Two Croatian nationals were arrested with radioactive material in their car at a border crossing in northern Serbia, a local news portal reported on Monday.

The Soinfo.org portal in the city of Sombor said that the two men were arrested at the Bezdan border crossing on Saturday with Croatia when sensors detected radioactive material in the car. Off the record reports said that a serious amount of radioactive material was found in the car.

The portal was told that specialists from the Vinca nuclear facility outside Belgrade were brought in to confirm the presence of the radioactive material. Customs and police officers were ordered to get rid of their uniforms and report for health checks. The impounded car was left at the border crossing for 24 hours, it added.

The portal did not specify what radioactive material was seized or what it could be used for.
