Red Star Belgrade FC apologized to AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the verbal assault on him during Thursday’s match at its stadium in Belgrade.

An as yet unidentified man shouted nationalist and religious insults at Ibrahimovic during the match while he was sitting on an improvised reserves bench. There were no fans at the stadium and the only people present were in the VIP boxes. Ibrahimovic was born in Sweden to a Bosniak father and a Croat mother.

“Red Star sharply condemns the insults shouted at Zlatan Ibrahimovic during the match with Milan. As a club we did everything to organize the match at the level of two big clubs and won’t allow one primitive individual to sully the traditional hospitality of our country and our people. Red Star will cooperate with the authorities to find the individual and insist on the implementation of all the consequences of that behavior. Red Star sincerely apologizes to Zlatan Ibrahimovic because of the unpleasantness in our house… we will never tolerate incidents like this,” a press release said.
