The Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) decided to submit an initiative to the Constitutional Court for a constitutional review of the provision of the new Law on Electronic Media, which mandates the dismissal of its members by November 4 this year, reported the Cenzolovka media freedom portal.
The information was confirmed to Cenzolovka by REM Council chair Olivera Zekic.
Under the new Law, the current members of the Council can hold their positions until November 4, 2024 – one year from the enactment of the Law on Electronic Media.
The deadline for the dismissal of REM Council members was agreed on between journalists’ and media associations, the then Prime Minister, Ana Brnabic, and representatives of the Information and Telecommunications Ministry, with the mediation of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, European Union Delegation to Serbia and the Norwegian Embassy, Cenzolovka reported.
The procedure to elect new REM Council members, which is the responsibility of the Serbian Parliament Culture and Information Committee, has still not been initiated.
