Zijin Copper took over the Bor Copper Mining and Smelting Complex (RTB) and has been accused of causing serious environmental damage to that part of Serbia.
A RERI press release said that it filed the charges with the residents of the village of Krivelj. It also called that Mining and Energy Ministry to revoke Zijin’s permit to exploit the Veliki Krivelj field. It alleged illegal activities by Zijin, adding that the Chinese company has started its exploitation in the vicinity of villagers’ homes.
RERI recalled that the local courts have only fined Zijin for wrongdoing, constantly ordering it to pay less than the fine set by law.
The organization warned of a possible mass exodus caused by Zijin’s operations. It added that villagers were being pressured into selling their homes.
