Residents from five villages near the southern Serbian city of Leskovac on Monday blocked with tractors a regional road, citing their frustration over waiting 15 years for the completion of a bridge over the South Morava River.
“We are so angry that we have to block a road and disrupt traffic, but there was no other option. We have been begging them for a decade and a half, while those in charge are getting rich and building villas in mountain resorts, buying apartments in Greece and across Europe. Enough is enough. This has to stop,” said two residents from the Donje Krajince village in the Leskovac municipality.
The protest was held on a heavily trafficked 300-meter stretch of road, where it connects to the new highway.
The villagers said only busses and ambulance vehicles would be allowed through, and announced daily two-hour blockades until concrete measures are taken to complete the bridge construction.
