The Ekoloski Ustanak (Ecological Uprising) movement said that it would stage a blockade of roads across Serbia at 2 pm on Saturday to protest the adopting of a new law on expropriation.

“The movement is calling all organizations and the public to unite in the fight against the stealing of our heritage,” a press release said. The press release did not provide details of the protest but said that information and instructions would be published on social media.

The protest comes after the Serbian Parliament adopted a controversial law on expropriation of property which gives the authorities greater powers to declare a public interest and take over land and other properties. Environmental organizations have warned that the law was adopted to accommodate the Rio Tinto company and its plans to open a lithium mine in western Serbia.
