RTK: Petition to dismiss mayor submitted

CIK spokesman Valmir Elezi told RTK that the signatures on the petition would be verified before proceeding further. RTK recalled that petitions were being signed in Leposavic, Mitrovica North and Zvecan – the three other Serb majority municipalities in the north of Kosovo.

The ethnic Albanian mayors of those four municipalities were elected in a vote boycotted by the Kosovo Serbs. The Kosovo government issued instructions on the signing of petitions to dismiss them following violent protests.

A vote to impeach the mayors will be organized within 45 days once the CIK confirms the petitions as valid. The impeachment requires 50 percent plus 1 vote. The results of the vote are sent to President Vjosa Osmani who has up to 45 days to call snap elections.
