Senior officials of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) expressed regret over the party’s support for Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic, the Nova.rs portal said.
SPS MP group chief Snezana Paunovic said in a parliament debate that she deeply regrets the fact that her party, which is part of the ruling coalition, should not have support Sapic at the elections for mayor of the Serbian capital. Her words were echoed in statements to Nova by other senior party officials.
Sapic is a senior official of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
SPS Steering Committee chief Branko Ruzic told Nova that Paunovic voiced the party’s view. “Snezana Paunovic, as the first among equals in the SPS MP group, is certainly empowered to express the party’s views. I see her words as just that, not a personal view,” he said.
That view was confirmed in separate statements by SPS officials Minister Novica Toncev and party Presidency member Predrag Markovic.
Earlier this week, Sapic was rebuffed over his decision to change the color of Belgrade city transport vehicles by SNS Minister Goran Vesic.
