MP of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) Nebojsa Bakarec accused the N1 and Nova S television stations of being responsible for “the sick atmosphere in society that is conducive to tragedies“ such as the recent mass shooting at the Vladislav Ribnikar elementary school in Belgrade and that near the town of Mladenovac.

Bakarec accused N1 and Nova S television stations, which operate within United Media (UM), of promoting “hatred, violence, stereotypes and prejudices” against 700,000 SNS members and its 1,300,000 voters and supporters.

"By promoting and practicing verbal and physical violence, the opposition and its media, owned by tycoon (UM co-owner Dragan) Solak and United Media, have been creating a sick atmosphere in society for at least six years, which is conducive to the emergence of tragedies like that at the Vladislav Ribnikar elementary school or in Mladenovac and Smederevo,” said Bakarec in the Serbian Parliament.

Addressing the Parliament, Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic accused “the tycoon media” of “poisoning the nation, sowing hatred, every minute, every hour.”

“You have the tycoon media that report biasedly, non-objectively from this hall every day and publish such half-information that they directly publish lies,” said Brnabic.

He also accused the media operating within UM of “dehumanizing and demonizing” Serbian President and SNS leader Aleksandar Vucic and his family, and calling for the assassination of the President.

Opposition MPs reacted strongly to Bakarec’s speech, they stood up and some turned their backs to the Parliament speaker, Vladimir Orlic.

Orlic repeatedly asked the MPs to return to their seats, and when Bakarec continued to speak, he was booed by some opposition MPs.
