Ruling party official files charges against Serbian President, cabinet minister

A high-ranking official of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) filed charges on Tuesday against President Aleksandar Vucic and Internal Affairs Minister Aleksandar Vulin over media reports of their alleged connections to the Belivuk crime clan.
A day earlier, Vucic told the Serbian state TV (RTS) that he and Internal Affairs Minister Aleksandar Vulin would be filing charges against themselves over claims that they were involved with the Belivuk organized crime group. Group boss Veljko Belivuk and his lieutenant Marko Miljkovic told prosecutors in separate interrogations that they met with Vucic personally as well as other state and ruling party officials who told them to stop some protests and take control of the Partizan FC supporter groups opposed to the authorities.
The charges were filed by Milos Vucevic, Mayor of Novi Sad and vice-chair of the SNS top party body. Vucevic told reporters that he filed charges against the president and minister which include all the claims made by the media linking them to the Belivuk group. He called prosecutors to determine the facts and provide the public with an answer.
President Aleksandar Vucic said that he decided to have lawyers from his party file the charges after hearing some media say that he should be interviewed by prosecutors. “I am ready to be questioned and have every word checked by lie detector,” he said.
This is the second time that Vucevic has filed charges against Vucic. He filed charges against Aleksandar and Andrej Vucic over the Jovanjica marijuana farm case in December last year following claims of involvement in the case by cabinet ministers with the knowledge of the president. The prosecution said late in January this year that the Vucic brothers were found to have nothing to do with the Jovanjica case.
