Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal Ratko Mladic, who was recently admitted to hospital due to his deteriorating health, should be released from prison “on humanitarian grounds.”

According to local media, Mladic was transferred from the detention cell in Scheveningen to a civilian hospital on Sunday, where he stayed for several days, and is now in the prison hospital.

Prompted by media speculation that the war criminal could be released from prison due to his deteriorating health, the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide and the Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves asked the president of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), urging the court to not consider such an option.

“We saw media reports about the hospitalization of Ratko Mladic in Hague caused by the rapid deterioration of his health. We believe it would be the right decision for the Residual Mechanism to release Ratko Mladić on humanitarian grounds,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement attributed to Zakharova.

In June of last year, Mladic was sentenced to life in prison. All appeals submitted by Mladic's defence were rejected.
The Hague Tribunal found Mladic guilty of murder, violation of the customs of war, deportation, inhumane transfer of population, terrorism, attacks on civilians, and genocide in Srebrenica.
