Andreas Schieder MEP said on Wednesday that the situation in Serbia is very serious but that the authorities aren’t considering any policy changes.
Speaking a day after the European Parliament debated the situation in Serbia, the Austrian SPO MEP said the protests in Serbia were shaping that debate. “The population’s dissatisfaction with (Serbian President) Aleksandar Vucic’s corrupt regime says enough,” he is quoted as saying in an SPO press release.
He said the Serbian people no longer want to see corruption costing money and lives and added that the tragedy in Novi Sad is just the tip of the iceberg. According to him, the situation in Serbia is more than serious but Vucic is not considering any policy changes and is rejecting his responsibility for the public dissatisfaction.
He said the current situation in Serbia is fatal and its current course takes it further away from the European Union. “The Serbian government must finally listen to the people and take the demands for clarification, responsibility and justice seriously. This protest movement has great potential to change the country – for the better. The political change of course cannot wait any longer,“ Schieder said.
