The Socialists and Democrats Group (S&D Group) in the European Parliament (EP) called on the European Union (EU) and international community to react to the case of detained Serbian student Bogdan Jovicic, whose life they believe is in danger due to politically motivated imprisonment in Serbia.

“The EU must not remain silent while a young man’s life is endangered for expressing his political views,” the second-largest parliamentary group in the EP wrote on Thursday evening on the X social media platform. S&D urged the Serbian authorities to provide “clear and verifiable information” on Bogdan’s location, health, and the reasons for his detention.

The Group called for the international protection of detained students and demanded that Serbia be held accountable.

“We call for the international protection of detained students. Serbia must be held accountable for violations of human rights,” the Group said.

Student Bogdan Jovicic was detained on the night of August 14-15, after the offices of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Novi Sad were demolished during a protest. He faces charges of violent conduct at a public gathering.

After his detention was extended, Jovicic went on hunger strike, and on Wednesday afternoon he was transferred from the prison in Novi Sad to the prison hospital in Belgrade.
