Second earthquake in a week hits eastern Serbia

The second earthquake in less than a week shook eastern Serbia on Thursday, the Seismological Survey of Serbia said.

“The Seismological Survey of Serbia recorded an earthquake at Petrovac na Mlavi region on On 07.12.2023., at 04:45 local time,” it said. The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.0 degrees on the Richter scale and 6 degrees on the Mercali scale at the epicenter.

The press release said that earthquakes of this intensity can cause minor damage to buildings near the epicenter.

The Seismological Survey registered two earthquakes in the same area over the past weekend. The first with an epicenter in the Petrovac na Mlavi area with a magnitude of 3.8 degrees and the second across the border in Romania with a magnitude of 4.6 degrees at the epicenter. The Survey said that eastern Serbia is an area frequently affected by tremors of a lower magnitude which do not cause any serious damage.
