An N1 reporter was harassed while reporting on a group of young men trying to wash white paint off a mural depicting convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic in central Belgrade, a day after a similar incident.

White paint was thrown at the mural by a member of an opposition party a day after police arrested a human rights activist who threw eggs at the mural.

The N1 reporter was told by one of the young men to stop provoking them. “We are doing our job; you do yours… We do not recognise genocide in Srebrenica. Serbia as a state did not admit that Ratko Mladic is some kind of fascist. This is not an image of Hitler or Mussolini. We are not breaking any laws… I don’t see your problem,” the young man told her. The reporter said that situation eased after he walked away following the heated exchange which included insults. The young man also denied being a member of any organisation. Others in the group claimed to be residents and patriots.

Later on Wednesday, the Association of Serbia's Independent Journalists (NUNS) condemned the interfering with the work and insulting an N1 reporter on Tuesday and demanded from the Prosecutor's Office to react, since "the police didn't want to protect the reporter and cameramen from the bullies though all happened close to them."

"A group of hooligans, who last night threatened the gathered people and shouted fascist and racist slogans, twice prevented Filip Lukic's live reporting for N1 in front of dozens of uniformed and plainclothes police officers. Shortly before that, one of those hooligans made open threats to the gathered people without any police reaction. He told Lukic after he stopped filming: "What are you afraid of? I won't beat you in front of the police," NUNS statement said.

It added the bullies "are members of the so-called 'People's Patrol.' extremists who recently, during the protest against vaccination, also disturbed and insulted N1 journalists."

The group of young men were trying to wash the paint off with water and sponges, the reporter said and added that several police officers were present at the scene. An N1 reporter was harassed by right-wing extremists during a live report on the protest at the mural on Tuesday night.
