Drivers with Kosovo license plates on their vehicles can drive freely through Serbia as of Monday under a decision taken by the government in Belgrade late in December.
Serbia banned vehicles with Republic of Kosovo license plates but overturned that decision after the government in Pristina banned Serbia-issued plates forcing Kosovo Serbs to re-register their vehicles in order to move around freely.
According to Petar Petkovic, head of the Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo, the December 25 decision is meant to help the Kosovo Serbs and provide added impetus to the Open Balkan initiative.
Most of the Serbs living in northern Kosovo have replaced their Serbia-issued plates with Republic of Kosovo registration. Serbs living in southern parts of Kosovo re-registered their vehicles several years ago.
