The opposition party Serbia-Center (SRCE) filed a criminal complaint on Monday with the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime against Marko Kricak, the Commander of the Unit for Protection of Designated Persons and Facilities (JZO), and seven of his associates.

Serbia-Center said the complaint was filed due to a reasonable suspicion that the officers, by exceeding their authority, severely violated the rights of students Nikolina Sindjelic, Stevan Zdravkovic, and Dusan Cvetkovic. The party said the officers unlawfully detained the students on the street and took them to the garage at the Serbian Government building where they forced them to kneel, stomped on them, beat them, slapped them, confiscated and destroyed their mobile phones, and threatened to shoot them in the head.

Kricak, his deputy, and six of their associates are accused of committing the criminal offenses of abuse of official position, dereliction of duty, and ill-treatment and torture. The complaint alleges that on August 14, they acted in concert as JZO officials to carry out these acts.

Marko Kricak is also individually accused of the criminal offense of sexual harassment against Nikolina Sindjelic, threatening to “strip her naked and rape her in front of everyone.”

The reasonable suspicion that these crimes were committed stems primarily from the public testimony of the three students, who described the torture they endured in detail on television.
