Serbia, Congo sign agreements to strengthen bilateral ties

The announcement came during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations and an Agreement on the Abolition of Visas for Holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports.

Djuric said the agreements would open new opportunities for Congolese businesses and entrepreneurs to operate freely in Serbia. “We will also be enhancing cooperation in the field of education,” he added.

The Serbian Foreign Minister thanked Congo for its continued support regarding the status of Kosovo and Metohija, particularly its refusal to recognize Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence. “We are especially thankful for Congo’s firm and principled stance,” Djuric said. (Kosovo and Metohija is the official name for what the Serbian authorities consider to be the country’s southern province)

He added that he also extended an invitation to Congo to participate in the upcoming international Expo exhibition, set to be held in Belgrade in 2027.

Djuric noted that 2024 marked 60 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Congo, describing Minister Gakosso’s visit as “historic.”

Minister Gakosso remarked that Congo and Serbia share many similarities, both geographically and demographically. He highlighted Congo’s rich natural resources, including fertile land and reserves of oil and gas.

“When I arrived in Belgrade, I was reminded of Josip Broz Tito. He remains a well-known figure across the African continent, one of the most recognizable Europeans, because he symbolizes the fight against fascism,” the minister said.

Gakosso also reaffirmed Congo’s understanding of the situation regarding Kosovo and Metohija and reiterated his country’s continued support for Serbia’s territorial integrity.
