Serbian Defense Minister Milos Vucevic said on Monday that KFOR should not allow the authorities in Pristina to send Albanian police officers to the north of Kosovo to replace their Serb counterparts.

He said that this would practically be an occupation of the four Serb-majority municipalities following the resignation of Serb police officers after the suspension of the commander of Kosovo Police Region North over his refusal to issue warnings and fine drivers with Serbian-issued license plates. Pristina set an October 31 deadline to replace those plates with Republic of Kosovo plates.

Vucevic, a high ranking official of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), said that the Serbian authorities are carefully monitoring the situation and assessing Pristina’s moves. “Now that the Serb police officers have withdrawn from the police, a security vacuum has been created and the situation is even more risky and complicated because the question now is who is going to do the regular daily police activities,” he said.
