“In recent days, we are witnessing the ongoing brutal treatment of peaceful student protesters and citizens in the streets... We call on institutions, organizations, and individuals to raise their voices and refuse to stay silent in the face of injustice. If democracy matters to you, this is the moment to stand up and act,” said the organization.
Palac Gore said it urges the European Commission to immediately engage the Serbian authorities, condemn the violence and demand independent investigations of police conduct. It also urges the European Parliament to place the matter on the agenda of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), and initiate an urgent resolution.
The organization urges the Council of the EU to revisit Serbia’s progress towards EU accession in light of these events, conditioning future steps on tangible human rights safeguards.
It also calls on human rights organizations and civil society partners to amplify the voices of those affected and ensure independent monitoring and legal support to victims of abuse.
“Silence in the face of brutality is complicity,” said the organization of the Serbian diaspora in Belgium, Palac Gore, in its open letter to EU institutions.
