The Serbian government formally called the president to dissolve parliament and call early elections on Monday.
A press release said that Prime Minister Ana Brnabic’s government sent President Aleksandar Vucic a proposal to dissolve parliament and call elections for MPs. “The holding of new parliamentary elections in existing circumstances would secure a higher level of democracy, ease tensions which have been created between opposing options in society, reject exclusivity and hate speech and affirm the right to free expression of views on certain political, economic and other issues, including the further affirmation of European values,” the press release said.
It said that part of the public has been demanding early parliamentary elections and that some opposition parties submitted that demand to the president. “The government started from that demand and took the view that the election process, as one of the basic postulates of a democratic society would be a good opportunity to rest the political strength of arguments, achievements to date and plans by all players on the politicial scene and allow the citizens to freely express their will about the direction the Republic of Serbia should take,” it said.
The government also decided to dissolve the Belgrade City Assembly and the local assemblies in 64 other cities and towns across Serbia.
