Serbian Justice Minister Maja Popovic told parliament on Thursday that a crime was committed by the person or persons who handed transcripts of statements by arrested criminals to the media.

The KRIK investigative portal and NIN weekly published parts of statements by organized crime clan boss Veljko Belivuk and his lieutenant Marko Miljkovic to prosecutors in which they claimed to have met senior state and ruling party officials, including President Aleksandar Vucic, and were told to take control of the Partizan FC supporters opposed to the regime and stop protests among other things.
The minister said she had raised the issue of how the transcripts of those statements were made public, adding that they were released without permission from the prosecutor in charge.

Popovic said that suspects can lie to defend themselves but that witness must not or face perjury charges.
