Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic told reporters on Tuesday that no new stricter anti-pandemic measures would be introduced despite demands by doctors on the government crisis response team.

She said stricter measures would be counter-productive and added that the answer lies in inoculation. “When we impose restrictive measures the number of people infected drops and when we lift them the un-vaccinated will go back to parties and weddings and the number of people infected rises again,” she said after a meeting of the crisis response team.

“We have reached more than 8,000 infected at daily level because we did not get vaccinated and vaccination is the only way to beat the coronavirus,” she said.

Brnabic said that the medical experts on the response team demanded much more restrictive measures and at least a 10 day ban on public gatherings of more than 5 people with shorter working hours for everyone but essential services as well as COVID passes.

Crisis response team epidemiologist Dr Predrag Kon said that he does not understand why the non-medical members of that body rejected the proposed stricter measures. “I don’t know what the counter-arguments were, especially about COVID passes,” he said, adding that the ban on public gatherings would prevent massive infection. Kon said that Brnabic disclosed their proposal at their request.
