Serbian PM: Rio Tinto to contact Environment Ministry

Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic told reporters on Tuesday that Rio Tinto has not contacted the Environment Ministry about a study on the effects of its Jadar Project to mine lithium.

Vucevic said that the only document that exists about the project is the government decree on a special purpose plan for the Jadar Project. He added that Rio Tinto has to contact the government and draft an environmental study before a public debate can be held.
“Once the Environment Ministry confirms that, the Ministry of Mining and Energy has to confirm the exploitation field and that is followed by many, many steps,” he said adding that it will take at least 24 months.
“Once we get the ecological guarantees and we see the economic side can the whole thing go ahead in agreement with our citizens,” he said.
