The Serbian Public Health Institute warned of possible serious infections after protesters in Novi Sad poured hundreds of liters of fecal liquid onto the entrance of the city hall.

The state-controlled Institute said in a statement on its portal that the liquid could cause serious infections including hepatitis, Escherichia, rota virus and others. “Feces easily sticks to footwear and is passed on to workplaces and homes which inevitably leads to infections among the young and old, causing a health risk,” it said.

Parliament Speaker and senior ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) member Ana Brnabic told reporters that the health of the public was put in jeopardy in Novi Sad.

Novi Sad City Council member Misa Baculov, an athlete and humanitarian activist, drove a tractor with a tank full of liquid feces to Novi Sad city hall on Tuesday evening, pouring it out at the main entrance. He was arrested for causing a public health hazard.
